As part of the course “Advanced Topics in Communication Networks” by Professor Plattner, I wrote the paper “Traffic Analysis of E-Collaboration and E-Learning Applications used at ETH Zurich“. The work was supervised by Dr. Wolfgang Mühlbauer. In this paper, I gathered and compared traffic measurements of three E-Learning applications that we provided at LET.

The measurement was done directly on the individual web application servers using tcpdump. The data of one week was aggregated using Perl with statistical methods and then compared. I compared the number of individual flows, number of source IP addresses, throughput and the number of packets over one week. The aggregated data could be used to detect network level attacks, as well as monitor the network throughput to detect capacity overflows.
